Weingut Leitz (Josef Leitz) Description

Under the direction of Johannes Leitz, Weingut Josef Leitz has earned the reputation of being one of Rheingau’s top growers and moreover, one of the finest producers in Germany. Since taking over his family estate in 1985, Johannes has grown his holdings from 2.6 hectares to over 40, most of which are Grand Cru sites on the slopes of the Rüdesheimer Berg. Once the home of some of the world’s most sought after and expensive wines, the region fell to mediocrity in the years following the Second World War. Josi has made it his life’s work to reclaim the intrinsic quality of his native terroir and introduce the world to the true potential of the Rheingau.

This is the fruity expression of the Roseneck vineyard. Crisp, cayenne and cut are just a few ways to describe this Spätlese. It is focused and feminine. Tasting the Katerloch GG and the Roseneck Spätlese side by side exemplifies why Johannes Leitz is one the greatest winemakers in Germany; it takes a deft hand to create two very different, yet equally compelling, vinous expressions of the same terroir.

Tasting Note: A rich nose with elegant ripe hints of exotic fruits, such as passion fruit, mango, lychee and physalis welcomes you in the first moment. There´s a scent of herbs and lime that seems to fall in love with the wild yeast aromatic of this delicious masterpiece. On the palate you will find a very airy middle section which keeps this refreshing and modern styled Spätlese in balance with an enthralling and fascinating acidity. The mineral impact gives us the feeling of licking pebbles and this Spätlese seems to be more dry styled than it is.

Wine Pairing: Mixed sushi, hotate no sashimi, grilled clams with Asian vegetables, or strong cheese.

Vinous: 94 Points

Seductive aromas of mango, banana, sweet herbs and honey. Rich, spicy tropical fruit flavors show a vague hint of botrytis and creamy depth. Certainly a touch on the sweet side, but nicely balanced and intriguingly long, this is one of the best spatleses of the vintage.

Wine Advocate: 93 Points

Rüdesheimer Berg Roseneck Riesling Spätlese offers a very clear, deep and mineral bouquet followed by a full-bodied, sweet, crystalline, piquant and minerally complex wine; there is more than 80 grams of residual sugar and an acidity barely under ten. This is an excellent, very complex Spätlese with a firm structure and a very straight nature. Highly recommended.
