Ruppert-Leroy Description
Planted 100% to Pinot Noir, Les Cognaux is located at the top of the hill with south/southeastern exposure. The word Cognaux is an old local word that means 'little corner,' as in a nice little corner of the world to grow grapes. In addition to their vineyards, Ruppert-Leroy operates a biodynamically-certified farm where they grow their own vegetables, raise animals, produce their own composts / biodynamic preparations, and host conferences on biodynamics.
Vinous: 90 Points
The 2020 Brut Nature Fosse Grely is a half-and-half blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the La Fosse parcel in Essoyes. Earthy plum and smoky, salty shortcrust pastry are appetizing on the nose, enlivened by a frisson of white pepper. The palate is closer to a still than a sparkling wine with its rich notions of melted butter and dissipating foam. While rounded and earthy, a fine streak of bright acidity anchors this in deep, rich soil. This Brut Nature is between a sparkling and still wine, with body and tension.
