Selbach Oster Description
3 Star (***) connotates that some (15% of total) Botrytis' fruit was included in the wine before fermenting completely dry. Adding the Botrytis' fruit adds additional depth and complexity to the finished wine
Vinous: 88 Points
Heliotrope, vanilla and poached apple on the nose are joined by raw ginger and a faintly volatile inner-mouth suggestion of Calvados on a full-bodied and somewhat ruggedly phenolic through otherwise surprisingly glassy-textured palate. The finish is gripping and stone-lined, not showing much refinement at present, but also not evincing more than the merest hint of heat from the 13% alcohol. There are suggestions of lanolin and resin from cask that - at least for now - harmonize less well with the wine's fruit characteristics than is the case with the corresponding Schlossberg trocken Bomer. On the whole, legally trocken Selbach-Oster Rieslings have an impressive track record for bottle aging, but for now I'm hedging my bets on this particular one.
