Maison Joseph Drouhin Description
South of the Côte de Beaune, not too far from the city of Beaune. Chassagne-Montrachet is one of the famous villages of the Côte des Blancs producing great white wines (the others are Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet).
The vineyard is on a gradual slope. Some old buildings, partially ruined, are found at mid-slope. This was the Abbey of Morgeot. It had two owners: men of prayer and men of the sword: monks from the abbey and the Laguiche family. During the French Revolution, the abbey was ruined but the estate of the Laguiche family was spared and remains to this day.
Tasting Note: This is a wonderful occasion to savour a great wine. Admirable light golden colour. Intense and elegant aromas come to the fore : hawthorn, apricot notes, evolving towards hints of blond tobacco. As the wine ages, there are nuances of dried fruit and rare spices. A silky texture and a subtle touch of tannin give a true personality to the wine. Remarkable aftertaste. A great white Burgundy.
Wine Advocate: 92-94 Points
Aromas of honeyed orchard fruits, buttery pastry, peaches, toasted nuts and spices introduce the 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Marquis de Laguiche, a medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny wine that's rich, glossy and unctuous, with all the fat and texture typical of this bottling.
Vinous: 91-93 Points
The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot ler Cru (Marquis de Laguiche), picked September 2 to 5, has a delineated bouquet with apple blossom, peach skin and light honeysuckle aromas that bloom in the glass. The palate is well-balanced with good substance and a better acidic spine than the preceding Meursault Genevrières. There is commendable weight and depth on the finish. Drink over the next 12 to 15 years.
Burghound: 91-93 Points
A deft application of wood frames the overtly floral-suffused nose of petrol, white peach, lemon zest and subtle spice wisps. The medium-bodied flavors are also rich to the point of opulence, yet the firm acid spine saves the balance on the saliva-inducing, long and powerful finish. This fine effort is very Morgeot in character and worth a look.
