Hiedler - Riesling Maximum 2016 (750ml)
Hiedler Description
It takes decades for the vines to grow into a mighty, gnarled stature and for their roots to have penetrated the deepest cracks and crevices of the crystalline rock soils. Our Maximum is sourced from a carefully selected collection of these ancient vines (80yrs+) that are growing in the historic terraced vineyards of Langenlois. Their yields are extremely low, resulting in exceptionally concentrated grapes. The valuable fruits are harvested late, when they have fully ripened to a golden hue. Before bottling, the wine matures for at least two full winters on the lees. This gives rise to a dense and brimming-with-juice Riesling, pushing the limits of concentration and grape variety to the Maximum.

Incorporates fruit from Käferberg, Dechant and Shenkenbichl, with smaller contributions from Kogelberg and Heiligenstein. Exceptionally for a Hiedler Riesling, some 20% of the blend saw wood - specifically, four months in a small acacia cask that had already been used three times for Pinot Blanc. The wood influence is demure. Sweet lime and hyacinth on the nose anticipate the zesty pungency and inner-mouth florality that emerge on a palpably dense, pithily concentrated yet subtly creamy palate. Pit-tinged white peach serves for succulence and piquant counterpoint, and winter squash adds pleasant earthiness that could have come from Grüner Veltliner, while hints of iodine and smoky lava salt lend mouthwatering savor to the impressively persistent finish.
