Elvio Cogno Description
The Cogno family has been making wine in the Langhe area of Piedmont for four generations. The values of history and traditions handed down by father Elvio are enhanced by the freshness and innovation introduced by his daughter Nadia and her husband Valter Fissore.
Barolo Cascina Nuova proves that even the youngest vineyards can produce an excellent Barolo, albeit easily accessible, more immediate and of wide appeal. Created for a public that wants to get to know the wine gradually before moving onto more complex examples, it might even be defined as a benchmark among Barolo wines. This is a wine that manages to reflect all the character of a major terroir.
The vineyards for Barolo Cascina Nuova are spread over 3 hectares of land facing the homonymous farmhouse, the seat of the winery. The vineyards are planted with vines that are an average age of 22 years old.
Tasting Note: sublime and captivating way—perhaps more so than ever before. The nose is seductive, offering intense and sweet notes of ripe, juicy berries, pomegranate, sweet spices, and balsamic hints. On the palate, it displays a beautiful acidsavory interplay, with dense yet pleasant and refined tannins. Full and balanced, it shows remarkable persistence, with lingering aromas that echo the nose.
Wine Spectator: 95 Points
Supple and detailed, featuring aromas and flavors of cherry, strawberry, plum, eucalyptus, iron and tobacco. This is all about finesse and balance, with a gentle line of malleable tannins on the lingering aftertaste.
Wine Advocate: 94 Points
The Elvio Cogno 2019 Barolo Cascina Nuova is the most accessible of the many excellent Barolos made by this leading estate in the village of Novello. The fundamental value offered by this wine is even more irresistible in a classic vintage like 2019. The wine opens nicely in the glass, unfolding to redcurrant and wild berry. There are varietal tones of licorice, cola and camphor ash over a firm, mid-weight texture.
Vinous: 92 Points
The 2019 Barolo Cascina Nuova is bright, effusive and beautifully lifted, right out of the gate. Crushed flowers, dried herbs, sweet red cherry, cinnamon, spice and hard candy soar out of the glass. Bright and medium in body, with plenty of verve, the 2019 is an absolute delight. I very much like the energy here. Moreover, the incisive Ravera tannins are nicely handled.
