Domaine Jean Chauvenet Description

Sourced from a miniscule 0.41 ha (1.01 acre) parcel.

The “grand cru” of this domaine; recognized as one of the most glorious sites within the appellation, the Chauvenet holdings here are old and produce a wine that embodies all of the wonders of Nuits Saint Georges; there is a deep fruitiness with both black and red fruits on exhibit, an earthiness that manages to be compelling and also elegant, all set upon a background of robust tannins that support a weighty but athletic wine; a wine that rewards substantial cellaring.

"Les Vaucrains" can be a little austere in most vintages - the bony soils sit direclty on the bedrock, hence its name, 'Vaucrains' translates to mean 'worth nothing,' as the vineyard historically had very low yields.

Burghound: 92 Points

There is a whisper of green tea to the spicy essence of black pinot fruit, plum and earth scents. There is better refinement if not better density to the punchy middle weight flavors that flash evident minerality on the firm finish that could also use better depth. The underlying material appears to be present for additional complexity to develop; moreover, this wine has an excellent track record of aging well.

Vinous: 90-92 Points

The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains ler Cru has a crisp, pure black cherry and raspberry scented nose, tight at first but opening nicely with aeration. The palate is medium- bodied with a silky entry, almost pastille-like. Needs a little more mineralité and substance on the finish, yet it should drink well for up to 15 years.
