Domaine Edmond Cornu et Fils Description
The Cornu family settled in the town of Ladoix in 1870 and established the domaine in 1875. Edmond Cornu assumed command of the estate in 1956 and in 1959 began to bottle the fruits of his labor. Up to that time all wines made at the estate had been sold to negociants. As the private clientele increased, Cornu also expanded the domaine. With the ascension of his son, Pierre, to full participation in the domaine, this dynamic family has aggressively pursued additional opportunities to acquire prime vineyard sites. Having expanded the domaine, Pierre is now joined by his cousin, Emmanuel Boireau, in supervising the vineyard and cellar work.
The Cornu family produces less than a handful of barrels of the rare white from Ladoix, from chardonnay—and a few stray vines of pinot blanc—just around the corner from Corton-Charlemagne. Like that grand cru, the wine is richly textured around a spice-inflected, mineral core. Barrel-fermented and raised in 20% new oak barrels, a mere 180 bottles make it to the States annually.
Burghound: 88 Points
A whiff of matchstick character is present on the citrus and spice-inflected green apple scents. There is both more volume and richness to the caressing yet nicely intense medium-bodied flavors that possess good minerality as well as better overall depth and persistence. This too could easily be enjoyed young.
