Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur Description
Bitouzet owns 0.5 hectares of Pinot Noir in this vineyard (incorporated into neighboring Le Ronceret since 2006) which sits just below En Champans on the slope; half was planted in 1948, and the other half in 1998. With its pretty spice element, elegant floral notes, and taut red fruits, this cuvée offers a supple, silken texture and subdued tannins—a quintessential Volnay, and the most open and approachable of François’s premier crus.
Vinous: 91-93 Points
The 2019 Volnay Les Aussy ler Cru comes from vines planted in 1997 and 1956. It has a punchy, quite energetic bouquet with vivacious red berry fruit laced with wilted iris petals and a touch of oyster shell. The aromatics are determined to grab your attention. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit and a fine bead of acidity. Without being banal, there is just a lot of Pinoté in this Volnay and that is something I appreciate. Open and generous on the finish, this does one of the appellation's lesser-known vineyards proud.
Burghound: 90-92 Points
Moderate wood sets off fresh, ripe and spicy aromas of red currant, violet and a whisper of rose petal. The sleek, detailed and pure middle weight flavors possess very good energy and a subtle minerality that becomes progressively more prominent as the lingering finish sits on the palate. This is lovely and understated.
Wine Advocate: 88 Points
Notes of sweet berries, plums and warm spices introduce the 2019 Volnay Les Aussy, a medium-bodied, lively wine with tangy acids and powdery tannins. Like many of these 2019s, I suspect it's a little shy after its recent bottling.
