Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur Description
The domaine possesses two parcels of Pinot Noir in this highly regarded premier cru, one mid-slope with browner soil, and one high-slope with whiter soil, planted between 1976 and 1986, totaling just over a half-hectare. This cuvée is one of dynamism, balance, and drive, and although there is marked tension between its vigorous acidity, soaring aromatics, and thickly rendered fruit, its dominant sensibility is one of regal poise. It is the most linear, most kinetic wine in the Bitouzet cellar, and it is stunning in every vintage, particularly with cellar age.
Burghound: 91-94 Points
A ripe, complex and spicy dark berry fruit nose exhibits additional breadth in the form of warm earth, floral and exotic tea scents. Here too there is a sense of focused power to the equally stony though larger-scaled flavors that culminate in a beautifully long if youthfully austere finale. Patience advised for this impressive effort.
Vinous: 89 Points
The 2018 Volnay Clos des Chênes ler Cru has a fragrant nose with redcurrant and cranberry aromas. The oak is neatly integrated, focused and delineated. The palate is well balanced with crunchy red fruit mixed with cracked black pepper. Fine details here, not amazingly persistent but becomes more menthol-like in the glass and, annoyingly, it eventually usurps the terroir expression. However, there is a sense of craftsmanship underlying this Volnay.
