Domaine A. & P. de Villaine Description
Les Montots is situated on fairly steep slope with southern exposure, planted with a selection of Pinot Noir vines from Nuits-Saint-Georges chosen for teir aromatic qualities and moderate yield. Les Montots is a Mercurey of its own kind, structured and viforous, deep with a dark ruby color. It will open up gradually with age, revealing the breadth of its complexity only after five to seven years. Depending on the vintage and your cellar, it will age and develop for fifteen to twenty years.
Wine Pairing: Red meats or game. Also cheeses will go well with les Montots but follow once again the caveat against soft cheeses like Camembert, Brie and Vacherin.
Tasting Note: The palate deploys dense aromas of red fruits with powerful tannins soften by discreet oak. This gives it texture once again salivating making the wine supple and juicy at the same time.
2025 will be the last vintage for this wine that the domaine has made since 1991 as the lease was not renewed by the owner (Domaine Faiveley). We are quietly hoping that this last vintage will be in magnums only.
Vinous: 90 Points
The 2022 Mercurey Les Montots has a fragrant bouquet of chalk-tinged red fruit, raspberry and cranberry, with a touch of smoke and undergrowth emerging with time. A light-framed Mercurey, the palate is medium-bodied and crisp, with tart red fruit and just a very small attenuation on the finish. Fine.
Burghound: 90 Points
A notably more floral-suffused nose features distinctly earthy and ripe aromas of various dark berries, especially cherry, along with hints of kirsch and the sauvage. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the beautifully textured, if not particularly dense, medium-bodied flavors that exhibit moderate warmth and rusticity. This firmly structured effort is borderline old school in style though with that said, it offers excellent potential for a villages-level wine.
