Champagne Pierre Péters Description
Over the last several decades Champagne Pierre Péters has become one of the most recognizable names on the best-curated wine lists across the US, offering generations of sommeliers, collectors and those with a penchant for the finest bubbles, reflections on the expansive terroir rooted in Champagne. In many ways a flagship of “Grower Champagne,” the domaine serves as a guide in the quest for authentic purity, finesse and complexity by the simple act of doing things right. It is an inertia built on excellence.
Terroir of “Le Montjoly” is located in the Grand Cru village of Les Mesnil sur Oger and enjoys higher percentage of clay with flints and deeper soil than most of other sites of the village. Seven parcels from this terroir, yield the grapes used to make this extremely rare and already sought-after cuvee. They are vinified separately and undergo different vinification.
Each vintage age at least 6 years on the lees before disgorgement.
These vines, impacted by the quality of the terroir and our mass selection practices, provide the definitive statement of the particular style of this clayey terroir.
A wine which achieves an ideal combination of an aerial nose and a mix of full mouth, resonance and mineral vividness.
Wine Advocate: 96 Points
Marked by a tight-knit core, the 2016 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Spéciale Les Montjolys is very different from the fuller-bodied, more powerful 2017 rendition. Disgorged in December 2023 with a dosage of 4.5 grams per liter, it’s a more linear Montjolys, stylistically reminiscent of the 2013 rendition. Offering up aromas of white flowers, green apple, fresh hazelnut and oyster shell, it is crystalline and nuanced, structured around mouthwatering acidity and concludes with a focused, chalky finish. It’s one of the more elegant versions of this cuvée, demonstrating subtle complexity, and I loved it! As always, it derives from a vineyard based on deep clay soil, where the resulting wines are more textural and less taut than those produced from Les Chétillons.
Vinous: 95 Points
The 2016 Brut Cuvée Spéciale Montjolys is all precision, tension and energy, with that extra kick of exuberance that is so typical of this site. Tangerine peel, spice, lemon confit, pastry and dried flowers are all beautifully amplified in this resonant, super-expressive Blanc de Blancs. Soft contours and an exotic flair add to its undeniable allure. There's real palate presence and overall depth here. Gorgeous tropical overtones linger. This is such a classy wine.
Dosage is 4 grams per liter.
