The wine region is part of the longest transverse valley found on the western Pacific Coast. Meaning that instead of its mountain ranges traveling from north to south. The regions mountains lay from east to west. This allows for cool breezes to funnel through the area making it suitable for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but it also extends far enough inland that you can grow Bordeaux and Rhone grape varieties as well in the warmer areas.
