While you're STILL stuck at home... (No. 21)
Mix It Up with Matthiasson Vermouth No.4!
Every few years we are graced with another vermouth from the folks at Matthiasson Wines. Each batch brings a new and exciting version of one of our most used cocktail ingredients. Batch No. 4 has just landed at Houston Wine Merchant and we can't wait to make all the cocktails with it. No. 4 is all about the base wine this year. It's made up of 20% Muscat de Alexandria and 80% of a grape called Flora. Flora is a variety bred at UC Davis in the 1950s. It's a cross of Semillon and Gewürztraminer thought to be bred specifically for fortified wines. When the California wine industry moved away from this style of wine, Flora fell into obscurity. It turns out that there is still some organically grown at Yount Mill Vineyards in California. The folks at Matthiasson begged them for some specifically to use in this vermouth. This is also a special circumstance since Matthiasson usually uses grapes exclusively from their own properties. Once the base finishes up fermentation and is blended, it is infused with a blend of home-grown citrus, and spices before it makes it way into the market. Try out this Matthiasson's Sweet Vermouth No. 4 in a Boulevardier, Negroni, Manhattan, or enjoy as an aperitif.
