Texas Wine Month - Episode I
Kicking off Texas Wine Month!
In celebration of Texas Wine Month, we're filling the month of October with a selection of lesser seen wine from the Lone Star State - in a series I have subtitled "Weird and Wonderful". For those not following the Texas wine scene closely, it has a been a remarkable place to be these past 10 years or so. The arrival of many young producers, along with a passion to find varieties and styles that really suit our climate, and a willingness to seek and embrace our own terroir - rather than hiding it behind over-manipulation or efforts to mimic other domestic styles - has really pushed Texas winemaking in a fantastic new direction (or many directions, depending on how you look at it). So we’ll start of gently - lobbing you a bit of a soft pitch, really. The “Weird” wine of the week isn’t really all that weird, given the increased interest in natural wine techniques and the growth in popularity of the “méthode ancestrale” - the sparkling technique that produces Pétillant-Naturel (often just “Pet Nat”) wines. William+Chris are arguably the first Texas producer to bring such a wine to the retail market, and are certainly the first to make a go of it. Starting in 2014, they have had at least one Pet Nat on the list, usually a rosé, and it’s become an annual favorite. This vintage is Sangiovese and Mourvèdre, with a bit of Cinsault and Trebbiano in the mix. On the other hand, our “Wonderful” wine of the week is also just a bit weird - in the sense that it’s rare to find a 3rd generation Texas grape-grower… and it’s equally as rare to find a single-vineyard Texas Merlot… particularly one beautifully made by the same family who grew it. This is a great example of the increasing maturity found in the current generation of Texas winemaking. Put you skepticism aside, and give Neal and Nolan Newsom’s wines a try - you’ll be glad you did! Cheers, y'all. As with all of our wines and spirits, you can order these right here on our web site, Tired of long waits for curbside and delivery?
