History
Houston Wine Merchant was first open in October of 1984.
We were then known as Wines of America, and we carried
only wines made in the United States. In 1987 we added
Australian wines because of the growing interest in that
continent. Also added were French champagnes.
!n 1990 the present store was opened in the Shepherd Square
Shopping Center at the intersection of Shepherd and Westheimer.
The original store was closed in 1991, and since then
we have continued to add about one country a year to the
product mix as our expertise grew. In 2000 we changed
the name to Houston Wine Merchant to better reflect the
wide variety of wines that we now carry.
Philosophy
In 1984 when we opened there were few wine stores in Houston.
There were many fine liquor stores that carried wine,
but twenty years ago, their focus was still liquor. Houston
Wine Merchant has since started selling fine liquor, but
our emphasis was and always will be fine wine.
We strive to communicate our love of wine in terms that
are easily understandable. We stock some of the finest
wines in the world and have them readily accessible in
our store. We hold weekly wine tastings so that our customers
have the ability to taste before they buy and to learn
from winemakers, representatives, and other customers.
We publish a bi-monthly newsletter to announce new products
and events. We deliver throughout Houston, the United
States, and overseas.
